Hidden cameras in hotel rooms and rentals are more common than you think.

Reports of guests discovering surveillance devices in Airbnbs, hotels, and vacation rentals have increased dramatically. Devices are often hidden inside smoke detectors, alarm clocks, USB chargers, and picture frames — in direct line of sight of beds and bathrooms.

"I found a camera in the smoke detector directly above the bed. It was recording to a memory card. The host had 47 five-star reviews."
— Airbnb guest, reported to CNN (2024)
"Guests generally don't check. They assume the platform has done it for them. It hasn't."
— Security researcher, The Guardian

No single scan catches everything. SafeRoom does all three.

Most detection tools only check one thing. SafeRoom combines network scanning, Bluetooth detection, and physical inspection into one 2-minute workflow.

🔵

Bluetooth Detection

Scans for every BLE device advertising nearby — not just paired devices. Hidden cameras, trackers, and microphones with Bluetooth will appear. Unknown manufacturer codes and strong signals without names are flagged for your attention.

🔍

8-Step Visual Inspection

A guided checklist walks you through the exact locations where covert cameras are most often found: smoke detectors, mirrors, alarm clocks, vents, plug sockets, USB chargers, picture frames, and bathroom fixtures.

🔔

Continuous Monitoring

SafeRoom watches your room's network while you're out. If a new device appears while you're away, you'll get a notification when you return — so you know if anything changed.

📋

Scan Reports

Every scan saves a timestamped report on your device. If you find something suspicious, the report is ready to send to Airbnb, the booking platform, or local authorities — with full device lists, signal data, and flags.

🔒

Fully On-Device

No cloud. No account. No analytics. SafeRoom contains zero third-party SDKs. Everything stays on your iPhone. It's the only hidden camera detector app that is itself completely private.

Three scans. Two minutes. Complete confidence.

A full room sweep takes less time than checking in at the front desk.

1

Connect to hotel Wi-Fi

Open SafeRoom once you're connected. No special network permissions, no VPN, no setup required. The scan starts immediately.

Wi-Fi scan — 20–40 seconds
Uses mDNS/Bonjour to surface all local devices, including those not shown in the router's standard list.
2

Scan for Bluetooth signals

Enable Bluetooth and let SafeRoom's BLE scanner run for a full 30-second advertising cycle. Every broadcasting device nearby will appear — not just those paired to your phone.

BLE scan — 30 seconds
Detects undisclosed cameras, trackers, and microphones. Flags devices with no name or unusual signal strength.
3

Complete the visual inspection

Follow the 8-step guided checklist to physically check the most common hiding spots — smoke detectors, mirrors, alarm clocks, vents, and more.

Visual guide — under 1 minute
Photos of each location plus clear instructions. The complete scan report is saved automatically when you're done.

Not all detection methods are equal.

"The app scans the environment for multiple WiFi and Bluetooth bands, and quickly finds anything transmitting. It then notifies me on my iPhone and Apple Watch of any changes. Simple and effective. It works."

"Clean, fast, and does exactly what it says. The guided inspection walkthrough is the most useful part — I didn't know to check behind alarm clocks and inside vents. Eye-opening."

Questions we get asked a lot.

Everything you need to know about SafeRoom before your next trip.

Can SafeRoom detect hidden cameras in hotel rooms?
Yes. SafeRoom scans your hotel room's Wi-Fi network for unusual connected devices, detects nearby Bluetooth signals from hidden cameras and trackers, and walks you through an 8-step visual inspection of the locations where surveillance devices are most commonly hidden — smoke detectors, mirrors, alarm clocks, and plug sockets. No single method catches everything; SafeRoom uses all three.
Does SafeRoom work for Airbnb hidden camera detection?
Yes. SafeRoom is designed specifically for short-term rentals and hotel rooms. Connect to the property's Wi-Fi, run the scan, and follow the guided inspection. If you find something suspicious, SafeRoom generates a detailed report you can share directly with Airbnb, the host, or local authorities.
Can SafeRoom find cameras that aren't connected to Wi-Fi?
SafeRoom's Wi-Fi scan only detects devices connected to the local network. For cameras that record locally or use their own hotspot, the Bluetooth detection and the guided visual inspection are your best tools. This is why SafeRoom uses three layers — no single method catches everything. A camera that doesn't appear on Wi-Fi may still broadcast a Bluetooth signal, or be physically visible during the inspection.
Does SafeRoom collect any personal data?
No. Zero data is collected, stored, or transmitted. All scans, device lists, and reports are stored exclusively on your iPhone. There is no account to create, no cloud sync, no analytics, and no third-party SDKs of any kind. Apple has independently verified this on the App Store under SafeRoom's privacy section.
What's the difference between SafeRoom and Fing?
Fing is a general-purpose network scanner with a hidden camera detection feature as one of many premium add-ons. SafeRoom is built exclusively for travel privacy — combining Wi-Fi scanning, Bluetooth detection, and a guided physical inspection in a single workflow designed for hotel and Airbnb check-in. SafeRoom also requires no account and collects zero data — Fing requires sign-up and has usage analytics.
What iOS version does SafeRoom require?
SafeRoom requires iOS 17 or later. It is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and Mac (Apple Silicon). The app is 14.7 MB.
Is the annual plan worth it over weekly?
If you travel more than 2–3 times a year, yes. The annual plan at $54 ($4.50/month) saves 82% compared to paying $4.99 per week. It also unlocks continuous monitoring — so SafeRoom alerts you if a new device appears on the network while you're out of the room — which the weekly plan does not include.
What should I do if SafeRoom flags a device?
A flagged device means it looks unusual for a hotel room environment — not necessarily that it is a hidden camera. Follow the guided visual inspection to physically check the most likely locations. If you find something suspicious, SafeRoom's scan report is ready to share with the front desk, Airbnb support, or local authorities. Do not touch or move a suspected device — document its location and report it.
